South East Asian Automotive News

A bimonthly newsletter of developments in the auto and auto parts markets.

ISSUE 4, DECEMBER 1997

Introduction

The South East Asian automotive industry has not enjoyed the last six months; nor is it likely to enjoy the next twelve. Nevertheless, we are seeing the first rays of light at the end of the tunnel: Toyota has cautiously announced plans to restart production in Thailand. Japanese and US assemblers have confirmed their commitment to the region. Farsighted component companies are seeing the current weakness as a source of possible opportunities. Our editorial examines the financial turmoil and the auto industry's likely reactions. We believe that it offers a realistic and measured view. Business Development Asia advises and assists clients in finding local business partners and opportunities, and in executing JVs and acquisitions.
