AIC Bhd, a leader in the supply of seat belts and air bags, has concluded an agreement with Atmel Corp., a U.S.-based supplier of integrated circuits, to assemble and test Atmel's integrated circuits for the next five years. Atmel will purchase AIC's output for the next five years at market prices. (October 31st 1997)
Autoair Holdings Bhd, an automotive air-conditioning manufacturer, plans to increase production volume in an effort to grab a greater share of the export market. A RM9m (US$2.5m) expansion in the central state Selangor will increase production capabilities to 660,000 units per month when the plant becomes operational early next year. (November 20th 1997)
Industri Otomotif Komersial Sdn Bhd announced plans to sell between 2,000 and 3,000 units of its new Inokom Permas vans in 1998. The RM100m (US$27m) Inokom plant has an annual capacity of 20,000 cars on one shift. Initially, the Inokom plant will open with a 10,000 unit operating capacity. (November 18th 1997)
Proton reported pre-tax profit of RM644m (US$176m) for the half year to Sept 30th. This represents an increase of 42%. The increase in profits was attributed to a 16% increase in sales volume, some newly consolidated subsidiaries and improvements in both efficiency and cost reduction. (November 21st 1997)
Proton announced that Saudi Prince Walid ibn Talal Abdelaziz had purchased 3% of the company for US$46m. Proton stressed that the purchase was meant as an investment. Proton also announced that the local content of the company's truck would be increased from 50% to 80% within the next five years. The export of Proton cars is to be increased, while the export of the motorcycle, Kriss, will begin shortly. (November 12th 1997)
