VIETNAM
Hino Motors Vietnam, a US$8.1m JV to manufacture heavy trucks, recently opened outside of Hanoi. The company is a JV between Hino Motors (a Toyota affiliate), Sumitomo Corp., and the Vietnamese Ministry of Transportation. The facility plans to assemble one 7.5 ton truck or 5.3 ton truck per day. Hino intends to expand to the manufacture of buses and other specialty vehicles. (November 27th 1997)
Toyota Motors Vietnam (TMV) began full production in October at an assembly plant in Vinh Phu. TMV is a JV between the Vietnam Engineering and Agricultural Machinery Corp., Toyota Motor Corp., and Kuo Pte Ltd of Singapore. The facility will produce about 200 vehicles per month, including the Corolla and the Hiace mini bus. Currently, car manufacturers import over 99% of components, however the Vietnamese government wants to make the automobile industry a foundation of the nation's industrial policy. (October 26th 1997)
