Mitsubishi Motors will begin assembling cars through its JV in Ho Chi Minh City in April 1998. Knocked down parts will be imported from a manufacturing base in Taiwan and assembled in the JV facility. The JV is owned by Mitsubishi, Proton of Malaysia and local partners. (January 19th 1998) The Vietnamese Government is contemplating a temporary ban on imports of motor vehicles with fewer than 12 seats and under 7 tonnes. This move would placate foreign carmakers in Vietnam who have recently complained that the Government's excessive lenience on foreign investment have led to production lines operating at less than 20% capacity.
