Business Development Asia LLCSouth East Asian Chemical NewsISSUE 8, AUGUST 1998MALAYSIAThe Eastman Chemical Co US$100m plant in the Gebeng industrial estate, Kuantan, began operations in May 1998 and has exported 1,000 tonnes of “Eastar” and “Spectar” copolyester plastics to China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and SE Asia. Asia Pacific accounted for US$506m of Eastman Chemical’s US$4.7bn revenues in 1997. (July 28th 1998)Hexza Corp Bhd, a Malaysian holding company with controlling stakes in several chemical companies, has recorded an 85% jump in group after tax profits to RM4.6m (US$1.0m) for the year ended January 31st 1998, compared with RM2.4m (US$600,000) in 1997. Chemical Industries Sdn Bhd and Norsechem Resins Sdn Bhd are among Hexa’s 16 subsidiaries. (July 13th 1998) ICI constructed a RM70m (US$18m) plant, Asia Decorative Technical Center, in Nilai, in the southern state of Negeri Sembilan. The facility will be a networking center for 12 Asian countries to exchange technical expertise. The plant produces paints and specialty chemicals. (July 9th 1998) Nalco Chemical (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Nalco Chemical Co, has acquired CSC-Kemico Sdn Bhd from Salcon Engineering Sdn Bhd. CSC-Kemico is a water treatment chemicals company with annual revenues of US$2m. Based in Shah Alam, CSC-Kemico provides water treatment products and services to middle market customers. Nalco is the largest manufacturer and marketer of specialty water treatment and process chemicals and services in the world. (July 14th 1998) Sosma Sdn Bhd, a JV between Kota Minerals and Chemicals
Sdn Bhd and My-Lyaa Sdn Bhd, was granted a franchise by Servo
Belden BV, the Holland-based production chemicals manufacturer.
Sosma will sell, blend and distribute Servo Belden’s products to the Malaysian
market. Sosma will principally market corrosion inhibitors, demulsifiers
and bactericides, as well as providing comprehensive technical services.
