Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd, based in India, has become the first company in Asia to sign a strategic alliance pact with Mallinckrodt Inc. of the US. Mallinckrodt will use Cadila's marketing base to introduce its medical imaging products in India, while Cadila will introduce its cardiovascular and anti-ulcer drugs in the US. No plans have been formalised on equity participation, but the alliance has a target for revenues of US$150m from what may become a JV. Cadila will give Mallinckrodt access to its manufacturing base in India as a sourcing point for diagnostic imaging agents, medical devices, pain relieving medicines, catalysts and microelectric chemicals. India, Indonesia and Malaysia are joining forces in researching and cataloguing medicinal and aromatic plants. The three nations will establish a network of repositories to store gene banks of lucrative plant species, some of them endangered. Bio-technologists of the three nations in New Delhi earlier this month identified areas of joint research. This included the frontier area of immuno-modulators. Research JVs for modulators and agro-technology will be discussed by scientists at the next meeting in Malaysia in September. India, Indonesia and Malaysia constitute the Asian segment of a group of 15 developing nations attempting to preserve and protect their plant wealth. The group is known as the G-15.
