SINGAPORE



DBS Land, which acquired a 19.2% stake in Parkway Holdings in May and is rumored to be acquiring a majority stake, has been given two seats on the board of Parkway Holdings. DBS Land is also developing three hospitals under its own PremierCare brand in Johor, Kedah and Indonesia. DBS Land will concentrate on setting up the three hospitals, but it will also look for real estate in the region to develop more hospitals. (August 18th 1997)

Ecotech Asia, Biosensors International, Inc., Health-Tronics, Lectec, Singapore Biotech and Singatronics are major Singaporean electromedical manufacturers that have an 11% stake in the Filipino market for electromedical equipment. In addition, Singapore serves as the regional base of a number of American and European companies, such as 3M Singapore and Baxter Healthcare Ltd, that supply equipment to the Philippines. Singapore is the third biggest supplier in the Filipino electromedical market, behind the US and Japan. (August 22nd 1997)

Parkway Holdings' senior management team is rumored to be looking for new opportunities in regional healthcare, on the assumption that DBS Land will acquire a controlling stake in the Parkway Group. Despite having limited depth of medical expertise, this proven team could represent an optimal partner for US companies in South East Asia. (September 19th 1997)

Pidemco Land, a property developer that diversified into the healthcare sector, and Raffles Medical Group (RMG), the largest medical group and the first fully-fledged healthcare services provider to go public in Singapore, have taken equal stakes in a S$200m (US$131m) project to turn Blanco Court into a hospital. This will be Pidemco's first healthcare project. BDA understands that the new hospital will be more competitively priced than Mount Elizabeth, Gleneagles, and East Shore, the three private hospitals owned by Parkway Holdings. In recent years, DBS Land, the Pontiac Group and Provisions Suppliers Corporation have entered the healthcare market, often in partnership with healthcare companies. (September 22nd 1997)

The Singapore Medical Association (SMA) has established a committee to look into the development of a home health care industry in Singapore. Over the past five years, organizations such as the Home Nursing Foundation, the Tsao Foundation's Hua Mei Mobile Clinic and Touch Community Services have started to offer home-based elderly services. (September 3rd 1997)

Singapore Technologies Industrial Corporation (STIC) has announced plans to branch into the healthcare business, following the success of Raffles Medical Group. STIC has been approached by potential partners in the healthcare industry to set up clinics and diagnostic centers in Singapore. In May, STIC invested S$16.6m (US$11m) in a healthcare JV with Toronto Incorporated InterHealth Canada (China) Inc. to develop a private international hospital in Beijing and eight clinics in key cities such as Shanghai, Tianjin and Guangzhou.
