Inchcape Consumer Marketing Co. and East Asiatic Marketing Services (Thailand) plan to merge their consumer product distribution operations. Both companies will be dissolved with almost all products handed over to the JV. An exception is healthcare products from the Inchcape Consumer Division which will now be transferred to Inchcape Healthcare Co. The JV is expected to have a turnover of Baht3bn (US$85.5m) and hopes to gain a substantial increase in bargaining power. (September 6th 1997)
Roche Thailand has confirmed that it will not increase prices of its products in the next three months although the pharmaceutical industry has been directly affected by the depreciation of the Baht. Roche estimates that costs will increase by more than 10%, but it will take 3 - 4 months to assess the situation before adjusting prices. One of the top three pharmaceutical companies in the country, Roche has a 4% market share valued at Bht20b-Bht25b (US$550m-US$690m). (July 19th 1997)
The Thai Cane and Sugar Board is conducting a feasibility study on the production of sorbital and mannitol. Both are value-added products created from sugar that are used as raw materials in the production of drugs, chemicals, gum and toothpaste. Encouraged by the study, the Government Pharmaceutical Organization and Mitr Phol Sugar Group are currently involved in talks about a sorbital and mannitol production venture. (September 18th 1997)
