FOCUS:

Leading SE Asian pharmaceutical companies

This month we profile selected leading regional pharmaceutical manufacturers. BDA has recently visited the senior management of these and other local drug companies to identify their future intentions regarding alliances, licensing arrangements and joint ventures with international drug firms. BDA is well placed to represent and advise Western companies which may like to work with them:

1. CCM / UPHA, Malaysia

Business summary: CCM is a holding company, formerly owned by ICI, and has been principally a manufacturer of chloralkalis. It is now engaged in an aggressive expansion into the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. UPHA, acquired in 1995, is the holding company for the health activities and the largest Malaysian manufacturer of pharmaceuticals.
Product range: Manufacture of over 350 pharmaceutical products (principally generics and OTC pharmaceuticals) and over 100 food supplements and herbal and vitamin products. CCM is also the Malaysian market leader in the manufacture of agrochemicals, fertilizers and industrial chemicals.
Partners: CCM has acquired a 10% stake in Impax, a California R&D firm investigating drug delivery systems. JV with Columbia Pacific to build three hospitals near Kuala Lumpur.
Revenues: In 1996 group revenues increased 12% from RM505m (US$135m) to RM568m (US$150m).
Senior management: Tan Sri Dato Mohamad Sheriff bin Mohammad Kassim, Chairman; Mr. Lim Say Chong, Managing Director; Mr Y.C. Lee M.D., Pharmaceuticals.
Strengths and weaknesses: Market leader in Malaysia in all business sectors in which it operates. A relatively recent market entrant, with as yet only a weak presence in prescription drugs.

2. Kalbe Farma, Indonesia

Business summary: Kalbe is in the process of shedding its food and packaging divisions in an effort to concentrate on the more profitable pharmaceutical division. Subsidiaries include pharmaceutical companies Kalbe Farma (ethicals: multivitamins, antibiotics, antirheumatics etc.) Dankos Laboratories (ethicals: antibiotics, nootropics, haemorrhiologicals etc.) and Bintang Toedjoe (OTC analgesics and flu medicines and ethical antibiotics and cough syrup).
Product range: 222 ethical drugs, 40 OTC drugs and 53 veterinary products. Promag (antacid), Mixagrip (cold preparation), XonCe (chewable vitamin supplement), Neuralgin (analgesic), Pronicy (antihistamine), Kalmoxilin and Tarivid (both antiinfectives), many of which are produced under license.
Partners: Kalbe signed an agreement in 1996 with IVAX/Baker Norton to manufacture and market IVAX products in Indonesia. Also licenses products from BMS, Warner-Lambert, SKB, Italfarmaco, Taisho, Kanebo, A.B. Astra and Pharmacia Upjohn etc.
Revenues: 1996 revenues for the pharmaceutical division increased 7.3% to Rp336bn (US$73m) from Rp313bn (US$68m) in 1995.
Senior management: Dr. Boenjamin Setiawan, Ph.D., President Commissioner; Mr. Budi Dharma Wreksoatmodjo, President Director.
Strengths and weaknesses: The pharmaceutical division of the company is performing well and is poised to enjoy significant growth. Kalbe has a good reputation in the market. However, the food division, which the company has since partially divested, showed a 57% decrease in revenues from 1995 to 1996. The company is also seeking to expand its prescription and OTC product lines which are weak compared to the international competition.

3. Kimia Farma, Indonesia

Business summary: Kimia currently produces 230 patented products, focusing on iodine, oral contraceptives, rifampisin, analgesics and other generics.
Product range: Pharmaceuticals, chemicals, medical & laboratory equipment, dairy and veterinary products.
Partners: Licensed to produce 52 copyrighted products by such companies as Kali Duphar, Organon, Sankyo, Rohto, Heinreich Mack, Schering and Medinova.
Revenues: 1996 sales of US$69m.
Senior management: Drs. Darodjatun, President Director; Drs. Syarief Bastaman, Production Director.
Strengths and weaknesses: Kimia has strong distribution but little R & D ability. Management has recently been improved, but government control has hampered the companys growth. Kimia has a network of over 90 company-owned pharmacies and wholesalers covering most of Indonesia.

Remedi Pharmaceuticals, Malaysia

Business summary: Formed in 1994 when Renong was given a fifteen year concession to privatize the Government Medical Store. Remedi distributes 850 pharmaceuticals, principally generics, and medical products to government hospitals, divisional stores and private institutions.
Product range: Pharmaceuticals, controlled and psychotropic drugs, vaccines, insulin and parental infusions and other non-drug medical consumables.
Partners: Cardinal Products is a JV with Apex, and Owen Health. Specialty Medical Laboratories is a JV with Special Laboratories Asia of California.
Revenues: Revenues in excess of RM200m (US$53m).
Senior management: Mr. Tan See Yin, Managing Director; Dr. Effendi Tenang, Chief Operating Officer; Mr. Michael Loh, Senior Manager, Business Development.
Strengths and weaknesses: The 15 year concession guarantees Remedi significant Malaysian market share as a distributor. The management team is relatively thin, however.

5. Siam Pharmaceutical, Thailand
Business summary: Siam Pharmaceutical is among the top ten pharmaceutical companies by revenues operating in Thailand and is ranked first among Thai companies. The company manufactures and distributes its own products (through Siam Bheasach) while also distributing foreign licensed products.
Product range: Antibiotics (60%), GI drugs (15%), growth factors (5%), as well as other including cough and cold drugs, analgesics, anidiabetes and cardiovasculars (20%). Drugs manufactured include CEF-3, Claraxim, Granocyte, Ibiamox, Ibilex and Metrolex.
Partners: Ajinomoto, Britannia Pharmaceutical, Cellpro, Chugai Pharmaceutical, Instituto Biochemico Italiano, NeXstar Pharmaceutical.
Revenues: US$32m in 1996, US$38m estimated for 1997.
Senior management:: Mr. Thawan Cheunkarndee, President; Vipada Cheunkarndee, Deputy Managing Director.
Strengths and weaknesses: Siams Manufacturing unit, Siam Bheasach, is one of the largest in Thailand and is GMP certified by the Ministry of Health. Management is strong. Siam Pharmaceutical needs to find new prescription principals, however. The Group may be stretched financially, having built a major new plant in 1996.
