PT Gemala Farma, based in Jakarta, and Amcal, the Australian pharmaceutical retailer, have ended a JV agreement sealed two years ago. The breakup was at the insistence of Gemala, which has recorded losses at the JV's 11 pharmacies. Amcal believes that the economic downturn, combined with the established market culture in Indonesia, make it difficult to assure long term profitability for their retail pharmacy concept. Inovax, based in Australia, has deferred its proposed acquisition of PT Ponco Indonesia, originally announced on July 14th, because the recent economic downturn. Inovax remains committed to an expansion into pharmaceutical manufacturing but believes that current economic conditions may now allow this to be achieved on more attractive terms. (October 28th 1997)
Merck of Germany has begun building a second pharmaceutical plant in Indonesia, the regional production center for the company, as well another pharmaceutical factory near Beijing. Merck will substantially expand its presence in Asia as part of its plan to double its worldwide revenues by 2005. (November 10th 1997)
PT Roche Indonesia, undeterred by the recent monetary upheaval, will begin expanding its plant in West Java at the end of this year, anticipating an increase in demand for pharmaceutical products. Production activities were not greatly affected by the currency turmoil because raw materials were imported under long term contracts. Roche has also launched exports to Thailand under a contract worth US$1m annually. (October 24th 1997)
