BCB Bhd, the Malaysian developer, has teamed up with HMI Balestier Hospital of Singapore to set up a RM30m (US$8m), 100-bed hospital in Kluang, Johor, which is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 1999. The proposed Kluang hospital will be part of a new township being developed by BCB. BCB will develop the hospital while HMI will act as a consultant and help manage the hospital. (November 25th 1997)
Faber Medi-Serve Sdn Bhd, part of the Faber Group, hopes further to enhance its expertise in support services and expand into private hospitals by next year. Faber forecasts revenues of RM280m (US$76m) in the year ending June 30th, 1998 from its healthcare support services. Faber was awarded the contract for the privatization of support services for government hospitals in the northern states, plus Sabah and Sarawak. (November 19th 1997)
The Malaysian Government is encouraging multinational pharmaceutical companies to set up manufacturing or re-packing operations in Malaysia and to make the country an R&D base. This move is aimed at ensuring stable drug prices following the ringgit's depreciation. The Government believes that the country's flora and fauna provide opportunities for R&D in tropical and other diseases. (November 22nd 1997)
The partnership of Member-Link Systems (MLS), Sunway Computer Services and Microsoft Malaysia presented its latest developments in IT support for the delivery of healthcare services at a conference on November 19th. MLS and Sunway introduced their new system, built on Microsoft's Windows NT Server platform, which they believe will make Malaysia a leader in medical informatics. (November 24th 1997)
Construction of the Sungai Buloh Hospital is still expected to start early next year with completion targeted at mid 2002. The hospital will provide a filmless and paperless environment and will have the most advanced infrastructure and facilities. The total cost of the Sungai Buloh City project is anticipated to be RM9bn (US$2.5bn) with 10% of that going towards the development of IT infrastructure and systems. (October 23rd 1997)
