PHILIPPINES
The National Development Co. (NDC) approved plans by the Philippine General Hospital for the Metro Hospital Waste Conversion Facility. The facility is designed to meet Western European emissions standards, the strictest in the world. The NDC believes the new facility will reduce particulates and heavy metal levels currently produced by 20 small hospital waste incinerators. Despite government approval, environmental advocacy groups including Greenpeace International are objecting to the project. (October 20th 1997)
Tryco Pharma asked the Philippine Supreme Court to dismiss a patent and trademark suit filed by Smith Kline Beckman over Tryco's use of the compound albendazole, the active ingredient in Tryco's drug Impregnon. A Kalookan regional court upheld Tryco's right over the drug and was subsequently affirmed by the Court of Appeal. The courts ruled that albendazole is not covered in Smith Kline's patent. Vista Healthcare Asia of Singapore has teamed up with a consortium of seven Philippine companies to build a S$126m (US$78m) tertiary care hospital and medical center in Metro Manila. (October 16th 1997)
Manila-based Yamanouchi Philippines Inc. has introduced Tamsulosin to The Philippines in cooperation with Zuellig Pharma, a regional pharmaceutical distributor. Yamanouchi Philippines also plans to introduce Indeloxazine and other products. Next year Yamanouchi will further increase its presence in the region by establishing sales operations in Indonesia and Thailand. (November 7th 1997)
