Merck of Germany will substantially expand its presence in Asia as part of its plan to double its sales by 2005. Merck has begun building a second pharmaceutical plant in Indonesia, the regional production center for the company and another pharmaceutical factory near Beijing, China. (November 10th 1997)
Nicholas Piramal India, Reckitt & Colman of India, and Reckitt & Colman Plc will set up a new JV company called Reckitt Piramal. The new company will focus on OTC consumer healthcare products and plans to commence operations in January, 1998. (October 16th 1997)
Raffles Medical Group of Singapore acquired Doctor Oram & Partners, a Hong Kong based medical practice, for HK$10m (US$1.3m). This is RMG's first overseas venture and will serve as a base for future expansion into China. Oram & Partners currently has four branches and will add two to four more branches costing an estimated HK$20m (US$2.6m). (November 3rd 1997)
Yamanouchi will continue to increase its presence in the region in 1998 by establishing sales operations in Indonesia and Thailand. (November 7th 1997)
