VIETNAM



International Vietnam Hospital officially began operating in Hanoi in October. The hospital, a JV between Bach Mai Hospital and Indochina Medical Care of Australia, is the first JV hospital with a foreign partner in Vietnam. The new hospital caters to foreigners and high income patients. (October 22nd 1997)

Presenius AG Pharma Division of Germany plans to build a factory to manufacture medicinal intravenous solutions in Vietnam in 1998. Details of the project including investment capital, location and range of products will be disclosed later this year. Currently, 20-30 million intravenous bottles worth US$10m-US$15m are sold annually in Vietnam. (October 24th 1997)

Vietnam Medical Equipment Corp (Vinamed) and Singapore-based GE Pacific Pte Ltd have signed a 30 year JV agreement to establish the GE Vietnam Medical Systems Co (GEVMES). Investment capital totals over US$3m with Vinamed contributing a 30% stake. GEVMES will assemble ultrasonic devices and plans in the future to assemble x-ray imaging devices and CT scanners. (October 16th 1997)

Vietnam Pharmaceutical Corp announced a 20% increase in sales to VND1,800bn (US$146m) for the first half of 1997. The company plans to build two pharmaceutical factories that meet Good Manufacturing Practice standards and will have its subsidiaries study and apply 108 new products in the next two years. (October 26th 1997)
