PT Astek, PT Astra, PT Bakrie, Lippo Group, Bank Niaga and PT Pertamina have launched captive managed care companies. At least 30 more conglomerates are expected to follow suit. The Indonesian Government hopes that legislation passed last year will encourage the private sector to apply for licenses to develop and manage insurance plans for their own employees. In turn, this will lead the private sector to build world-class hospitals, train doctors and purchase state of the art equipment. (January 5th 1998)
The Association of Indonesian Hospitals Managements (Persi) has asked The Ministry of Health to help hospitals with drug and equipment shortages during the monetary crisis. Persi also urged the Government to suspend value-added tax on medicines and health related appliances. (February 5th 1998)
The Indonesian Government has announced a 15% increase in generic drug prices from March 1998. The price increase is in response to the depreciating value of the rupiah against the US dollar. Indonesia's pharmaceutical industry imports 70-80% of raw materials used in the manufacture of generic drugs, spending US$180m in 1996. The generic drug industry in Indonesia manufactured over 400 drugs, with a 1996 distribution value of US$425m. (January 8th 1998)
PT Purayashuma Sakti and PT Garama Adipratama will set up a new Indonesian joint subsidiary, PT Recon Pharmagriya, with Indian partner Recon, at a cost of US$6m. The new subsidiary will produce antibiotics and drugs for the Indonesian market and revenues are expected to be US$10m-US$15m in 1998. Recon will hold 51% of the new subsidiary. (January 6th 1998)
