Delegates from eight ASEAN nations, Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand met in Singapore for talks on accelerating the entry of new pharmaceuticals into the region. The conference focused on the standardization of application forms and labeling requirements in order to make new drugs available more quickly. (February 4th 1998)
The Brunei Government is considering entering the seaweed processing industry. Seaweed products are widely used in pharmaceutical productions and food processing. Demand for such products is high in the region and internationally. The Government-owned investment agency is working out a deal to buy a leading Philippines-based seaweed processing company for US$40m. (January 8th 1998)
Health Care of Australia (HCoA), Australia's largest private healthcare group, has set aside A$200m (US$130m) for expansion opportunities in Asia in the next five years. The group is focusing on India, Indonesia and the Philippines but is open to opportunities in surrounding countries. The company already has A$50m (US$34m) invested in the region with a hospital JV in Jakarta and hospitals being developed in India and Indonesia. HCoA had revenues of A$720m (US$483m) in 1997, 35 hospitals in Australia and is looking to buy 11 more in the country. (January 5th 1998)
Novartis, currently the world's largest pharmaceutical manufacturing company, has decided to close its production line in Taiwan because of the country's allegedly unreasonable pharmaceutical pricing system. The company may relocate its production facility to mainland China or South East Asia. This decision by Novartis comes after Bayer's decision to suspend plans for a US$1.5bn production facility in the country. (January 15th 1998)
Quintiles Transnational, a US-based healthcare and pharmaceutical company, has announced the opening of its Shanghai office. This will be its third office in China; the company opened offices in Beijing and Hong Kong last year. Quintiles has already formed strategic alliances with three leading Chinese medical centers: Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Shanghai Medical University and Beijing Medical University.
