VIETNAM


A pharmaceutical JV between the Vietnamese provincial Government of Binh Dinh and its Laotian counterpart, Champasak Province, began operations in March. The JV, located in Binh Dinh, has an initial investment capital of US$700,000, with the Vietnamese province holding an 80% stake. It plans to produce over 40 drugs this year and will spend US$2m to install four additional production lines. (March 23rd 1998)

The Vietnam Pharmaceutical Corporation announced a series of projects calling for foreign investment to develop new pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and to upgrade current facilities. The first two projects, with a combined worth of US$60m, will develop two pharmaceutical plants with Good Manufacturing Practice standards in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. These factories will be able to produce US$80m worth of products per year using high technology and franchise contracts. The other projects are in areas such as pharmaceutical chemicals, pharmaceutical material cultivation, packaging, traditional medicine and distribution channels. (March 13th 1998)
